The best thing Council can do right now is curb spending so that there are some resources left in the tank for the next generation. Current debt and spending projections will leave the next generation with no room to set their own Council priorities and make their own decisions.
It is difficult to engage anyone (let alone the young) in the machinery of Council decision-making so we need to make it much more open and less process driven.
Our rangatahi have grown up much more media savvy than previous generations so we need to wind back the OTT marketing/overselling.
We need to ask open questions that give room for listening and learning by both Council and its communities. People feel the Council talks at them, rather than with them.
