Open Government / Transparency

We must put openness at the heart of council’s political process. No secret workshops and no stifling of debate and discussion.
Consultation on community projects should be open, transparent and not be a means to a predetermined end (eg “do you want a concrete path” rather than “what colour would you like your concrete path”)
There is a widespread perception that consultation is predetermined and, whatever the public says, Council will push on with its plans regardless.
We need a more humble approach by council that explains to people both the cost and benefits of new proposals – and leaves open the possibility of retaining the status quo, where possible.

Achieved so far:
1) Workshop notes published in council meeting agendas so public can monitor discussions;
2) Many more questions and much more debate at open council meetings than previously;
3) Ward forums with detailed information about council projects and issues;

NOTE: achievements are always by the council as a team, not just me!

Next steps:
1) Publication of workshop dates and topics so the public know what is coming up;
2) Much greater involvement of community boards in discussion and decisionmaking in their communities;
3) Active engagement by council leaders in social media and other outlets for communication
4) Inclusion of status quo in public consultation programmes, with candid explanations of benefits and costs for each proposal;
