Some very valuable points are made here today by my brother, Steven Joyce.

The one thing I would add is the very real risk, if water assets are stripped out, that councils will go out again and max out their balance sheets - adding further to the burden of ratepayers (who will then be paying both rates and waterco charges).

Most of current debt at our council, for example, is infrastructure-related debt, so moving that off the balance sheet will lead to enormous temptation for some…
